Gold Beach Artist Wins Honors

November 29, 2016

The People’s Choice votes have been tallied for the Coos Art Museum show that ends Dec. 2.

Among the winners is Gold Beach artist Tod C. Steele, who won an honorable mention for his acrylic painting “Frida Cowlo II.” The prize was one of eight awarded among 267 pieces.

The exhibition provides Oregon artists from across the state an opportunity to exhibit their recent works within an art museum setting. The creativity of 110 artists has been on display at the museum since Oct. 14, according to Steven Broocks, museum executive director.

The highlight of this exhibition is the People’s Choice Awards, which are determined by audience votes.

“In a very unusual twist, two artists have tied for the 2016 People’s Choice Award,” Broocks said. “Coos Art Museum is excited to announce the first place goes to both Jean Kyle of Coos Bay and to Sandy Kudo of Bandon.”

Kyle’s work “Into the Woods” is a watercolor; Kudo’s piece titled “Reef Rascals” is a carved and painted gourd. Both will exhibit their work at the museum starting in December 2017.

Marcella R. Weaver’s oil, “Yellow Tomatoes,” captured the eye of voters and was presented People’s Choice second-place honors. “Gerberas,” an oil by artist Lynne Margulies of South Beach, received third place.

In addition to Steel’s award, honorable mentions were presented to Dale Karstetter of North Bend, who specializes in wildlife wood carvings, for his entry, “Stretch”; Kevin Audett of North Bend for an oil, “Colorful Night”; and Wes Whitman of Coquille for his watercolor “Summer Retreat.”

Coos Art Museum occupies the historic 1936 Art Deco US Federal Building, 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday. Museum admission is $5 general; $2 students, veterans and seniors; and free to museum members.
