Events CalendarWild Rivers Mushroom Festival
Date: Nov. 3, 2018 - Nov. 4, 2018
Time: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Scheduled to fit between two other regional mushroom events - the popular Yachats Mushroom Festival in October and the large Humboldt Mushroom Fair on the Sunday before Thanksgiving – the Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival in Brookings, Oregon, plans to take over the entire two-story Chetco Activity Center on 550 Chetco Avenue in downtown Brookings and fill it with mushroom stuff: mushroom art, mushroom food, mushroom medicine, mushroom clothing, mushroom compost, mushroom beer...oh yes, and, of course...wild mushrooms!
The festival is the brain child of the Wild Rivers Mushroom Club (WRMC), a nonprofit group based in Brookings and made up of amateur mushroom lovers from throughout Curry and Del Norte Counties. This is their second year for the Festival, and because they had so many people that first year come to learn about and celebrate the region's wild mushrooms, the club decided it better expand the 2018 Festival into two days and offer a lot more opportunities to enjoy wild forest mushroom fun!
The first weekend in November is usually the peak of the wild mushroom season along the southern Oregon coast, so it shouldn't be hard to fill both days with tons of mushroom-related activities, including: an identification table filled with examples of the region's fungi, both edible and non-edible; vendors selling all manner of fungi-related products, including fresh edible mushrooms; workshops throughout both days, including presentations on identifying, growing, harvesting and using both wild and cultivated mushrooms; educational mushroom hikes along various coastal trails; and expert presentations, including a new talk by renowned mycologist Dr. Dennis Desjardin, who is back by popular demand. Some of the activites will be free; there will be a small charge for others. See the festival website for more details.
The 2nd Annual Wild Rivers Mushroom Festival is once again being supported by Travel Oregon, Oregon Coast Visitors Association, and the City of Brookings.
